Parsnips. Meh.

Maybe parsnips don't like me.

I have parsnip seeds scattered on a folded bit of kitchen towel, which I'm keeping damp by sprinkling water on it morning and night. It's on the kitchen windowsill so I'd've thought it's getting enough light. But. Still. Nothing.

So, what am I doing wrong? Should they be in the dark? Should they be covered? Should they be wet instead of damp?

I WANT PARSNIPS THIS YEAR!

Gah!

Hi Sarah,
Not full of water but definately damp, and put a layer of kitchen towel on top too. Be patient :o), I did mine a week ago and I've only one or two with shoots on. Mine are on the windowsill but I know that lots of people do put them somewhere dark!?

I've taken a pic of mine for you to see the progress.

Mine are definately damper than you are keeping yours - so I think step up the water!
Hope it works for you, I love parsnips!

Yeah, I admit they'd dried out somewhat when I took the pic - usually they're damper then that, honest! I've now covered mine with another sheet of kitchen towel and might put 'em in the airing cupboard... Thanks for the help Julia! S

Since the Great Chitting Debate I've been having a go and chitting all over the place - on trays in plastic bags in the airing cupboard (as recommended by Nic's grandfather!) and have had muchos sucess! Cheers, Julia!

I tried chitting on paper towel last year and gave up! Parsnips are always tricky, I always buy new seed every year. I've found the best way to plant is to poke a hole with a crowbar, fill it with sandy compost and plant 4 or 5 seeds on top of the hole. At least one of them will come up and you pick the strongest to survive!

I did mine in a sealed clear plastic container which was put in the airing cupboard (warm and dark). The kitchen roll was wet to start with and I think I gave it a quick spray once or possibly twice in the week or so they took to germinate...
Was actually pretty chuffed as ended up with pretty much 100% germination which seemed pretty good since I was using out of date seed...

Hang on in there, I'm sure yours will be sprouting in a few days. :)
